The Most Powerful Thing I’ve Learned as a Healer

A spiritual teacher once gave me advice early in my spiritual healing career. She said, “Get to God. And stay there.” This is the most powerful thing I have learned as a healer. Here’s why.

When trouble hits, whether it’s tiny or humongous, the sooner we turn to God (or what you refer to as a divine power greater than yourself and everywhere present), the sooner the healing will take place. In fact, nothing activates healing like the mere conscious effort of turning to God.

We’ll talk about the “staying there” in a minute. For now, let’s unpack the power of getting to God and early on.

What happens when you turn to a power you consider to be higher and greater than yourself is this. Something opens up in your consciousness to receive help. There is a universal law that is ready to fill that opening with a blessing. That’s just the way healing works. It isn’t complicated.

When you turn to God, your receptivity ignites with the power of humility. And I do mean power! Your receptivity is a powerfully humble place that silently says, “I don’t know the answer, but I believe that I include a loving, benevolent Presence that has the answer. And as I turn to this Presence, it will be pouring forth and orchestrating an answer for me.”

I can guarantee  you that from the moment you turn to this Presence, your healing begins.

The next part of the spiritual woman’s advice was to “Stay there.” That’s where most people have the greatest challenge and the greatest growth. Stay-power builds tremendous, spiritual inner strength.

When we look at Olympic contenders, we are looking at stay power. They stick with the discipline day after day. They focus on their main objective. They trust this to succeed, and their daily discipline, along with their faith that there will be growth and improvement from their endeavors, prove that exceptional results occur from stay power. The same occurs with spiritual healing.

How long is your general stay power?

The trick is to realize that no matter how much fear, no matter how much frustration or anxiety or isolation you may feel during a crises or a mini-crises, or how long it endures, you have decided that you are going to stay with God and ride it out, trusting that something very healing will result. As you continue this holding pattern, you slowly become aware that there is something sustaining you during this time. It’s the Presence. It’s healing.

Sometimes it’s hard to do. But it works.

Maybe the problem is loneliness or a desire to be loved. Or the problem is chronic financial insufficiency or lack of a job. Or let’s say there’s a problem of mounting health challenges. Or, it could be a million other things that are common to the human experience and loaded with fear. The answer is no different from one problem to the other. It’s still “Get to God. And stay there.”

A number of years ago, my 87 year old dad was hospitalized with double pneumonia and type A virus. It was serious. About a week or so into his illness, I flew back to Arkansas to be with him and my mom. I spent most of the days at his bedside. Daily, I met twice with his wonderful doctor. We had progress updates and serious talks about his prospects. No one knew if he would live.

As a healer, I turned to God repeatedly by the hour, asking for guidance and help to see him as he is truly made, in the image and likeness of God – strong, able, ageless, immortal, healthy, well, and even perfect. I had many moments where these images were sustained. At other times, I struggled to maintain my strong position.

The first days were intense as I adapted to the new life style of staying by his bedside and also being with mother to help her with her own fears. The family was worried. Only God could get us through. Everyone prayed. And everyone stayed with the prayers.

Slowly, over a period of weeks, he improved. Even when he relapsed, I remained in my position to just get to God and keep staying there. Where else would I go? It’s all I had.

I remember a turning point for myself. I had been with him for such a long time, and became mesmerized by the slow, weak breath. Day after day, I watched him lie there. This was a robust man who played golf daily and did yoga and was very physically active. Yet he barely moved or knew anyone was there. There was no sign of recovery and I struggled to stay hopeful.

Full of this picture one day, I felt like I was about to burst wide open with despair. I ran out of the hospital room into the hallway and just kept running, crying hard. My heart was breaking. But as I ran, looking for a safe place to cry, my thought turned to God and a lovely thought unfolded. “Remember, angels are with him.” I felt immediate comfort and was able to return to the room to continue my practice of witnessing “God with dad” as the main event rather than “dad dying” as the main event. I was given the ability to bear it and stay with the watch. This time I felt strong.

I’ve followed the advice, “Get to God. And stay there,” many times over the years and it still continues to be the best advice I’ve ever been given as a healer. Each time I have practiced this, I have grown in strength and faith. It is the stuff of spiritual warriors.

My dad’s recovery was slow but complete. Today, he and mom enjoy a full life, living just down the street from me. Now, they’re both doing yoga and they just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, of 70 happy years. They have inspired many people to consider how good life can be in your 90’s as they enjoy good health, independent living, outings, driving to church, the golf range, and all their favorite places for coffee.

So, do you want to see healings everywhere in your life? Do you want to become a powerful healer? Six words!

“Get to God. And stay there.”

I’m with you with love.
