Be Fearless

What are you afraid of?

Fear, if not addressed, will control your life. What can you do about it? How can you be fearless?

I sometimes awaken in the morning with immediate fears. They start setting up my whole day with an anxiety load, within moments. Fear accelerates into, “What if things get worse?!!!” All in the first moment of awakening! It’s like being ambushed by a surprise attack.

At that moment, there is nothing more important to me than facing fear. Regardless of what comprises the fear story, it is fear that lurks behind it. At that moment, I address fear itself. I lie there. Me and fear. I have decided not to run.

Ted Kennedy wrote about the fears that followed him after his brothers were assassinated. He said it was like being chased by the dark, so overwhelming that it had him running from it causing him to heavily drink and party for years.

I remember years ago after my husband abruptly left me, I was terrified. Suddenly alone with a sense of irreparable loss. Repeatedly, I thought, “What’s going to happen to me? Am I going to be all right?” This fear acted with urgency. I was panicked. It kept me awake at night and caused me to lose my appetite (which is saying a lot!). This went on for months. The fear drove my nervous system. In fact, it felt like my whole life was being run by fear. I was emotionally afraid and uncomfortable, living with unbearable insecurity about my well being. Fear was everywhere and I couldn’t escape it. It felt like I had become fear itself.

That big fear event has come and gone. I did fine. Since that time, I’ve studied fear. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t usually creep in, actually, it just appears as though it was already there. What’s the answer to the fear or anxiety that tend to drive our lives and drive out our joy, peace, and freedom?

Here are a few answers I’ve come up with to be fearless.

The first step is to face the fear. Just stop and face it. It isn’t really the doctor’s diagnosis, the not enough money, the relationship problem, the aging factor or anything other than fear. Fear creates a state of anxiety and runs our nervous system. It comes with a story, people, and projected negative outcomes. It feels real and personal as though it’s who we are.

Yet, the hero in the story of fear is you. It’s where you face fear and sit with it. It’s only fear. It’s only an emotion, an energy, a nervousness, a worry. It isn’t who you are. It isn’t your life. It is something else. Something that isn’t yours. It doesn’t belong to you. Disown it.

To review, first you face fear, allowing it in your space, while you understand it is not you and you are separate from it, as you disown it. This is powerful. It can’t run your nervous system if you don’t run from it. You’re starting now to be fearless.

<Here’s something more that is considerably powerful. Remember who you are. You are an original, magnificent, powerful, divinely sourced being that is a total wonder. You are not alone. There is a guiding, loving, caring Presence with you at all times, even when you aren’t aware of it. As you bring this into focus, you begin to access this wonderful Presence. Ask it for guidance and care as you sit with the fear energy.

Stay with the affirmation, “I’m going to stay with this Presence all day and continually, in order to meet this present state of fear.” This adds a certainty to the situation that, beforehand, was uncertain. You’re being fearless.

Now you have several things going for you. You have courage to face the fear. You have the decision to stay with this position rather than run. You have the understanding that you are disowning the fear and its story, no matter how real or true it appears to be. And finally, you have the awareness of a loving and intelligent, divine Presence that is with you and is powerful to bring you through the fear.

You now have everything you need to be the master of fear. As you move through your day, live consciously of your decisions and position with fear. You’ve taken a no nonsense approach and it’s a strong position. You’re counting on All That Is, a loving Presence, to guide you through it. You will, most likely, learn something. That’s your prize.

Look for the something that you are learning. It may be refined. That’s okay, you have powerful refinement within you. You aren’t going to miss the prize. You may already be experiencing the prize from following these steps and discovering you can do it. That’s big. You’re big. You are bigger than your worst fear. You are bigger than all your fears combined.

Let your bigness shine out from all the negative feelings, fears, panics, overwhelms, anxieties, worries, and concerns. Your bigness is already identified with another bigness, the Presence, which accompanies you and causes you to find your way, every time.
