Hate is a cry for Love.
The real news story is the power of Love to dissolve hate.
I put down the newspaper, having read yet another story of a hate crime against an innocent person. The paper also described the entire atmosphere and history of hate in this area of town. I felt like crying. “When will it ever end?” I asked.
Then I thought of the higher question, “How will it ever end? If Love could only pray one prayer that would end all the hate, anger, revenge, violence, and evil on earth, what would that prayer be?”
Years ago I revisited my old neighborhood with my husband. We drove by the house where I had lived and along the street where I took daily walks. Just then I saw the back of a woman. I knew her. Immediately my stomach was gripped with pain. I had to pull over and stop the car.
My husband asked what was wrong. I tried to explain the venomous hate this woman had expressed towards me on a number of occasions – hating me for no apparent reason. As I sat in the quiet car, I listened for divine guidance. I was led to confront the mental picture I held of this woman being hateful, and to replace the picture with a pronounced, spiritual view of the woman. It was clear that, in order to be healed of sharp pain, I was being led to heal my own view of her.
I stated out loud that, since divine Love is the source of all life, this woman was also created by Love. As I listened for further inspiration, many of the evil acts she did against me flashed before my thought. I persisted in prayer. It then occurred to me that perhaps no one had seen her spiritual identity and that I might be the first to do so. Years earlier, my prayers were motivated to be protected from her but had not touched on the real issue of her spirituality.
As I sat there in the car with my husband, we received divine inspiration that reminded us she was of a good source. We took a strong stand for her true spiritual identity. The pain began to leave.
I then continued to drive the car through the neighborhood, tracing old footsteps. But a few blocks down the road, I was again struck with pain and had to pull off the street. Back to prayer. We again reasoned that there could be no evil or harm since there was no creator of it. I thought of the woman and decided that, for the rest of my life, whenever I thought of her, I would picture her in my mind as precious and completely good. It was a spiritual decision. The pain immediately left. Since that time I have not altered my decision of her spiritual identity as the fact about her true being.
This is a lesson that proved to me the power of loving, spiritual thought to dissolve hate. What happened? I exchanged a mistaken picture of reality – of hate – for a true and higher picture of the reality of Love. This taught me that the spiritual reality of Love – though it may not seem to be so – is always present and has the ability to dissolve hate, which appears to be so real and powerful. It wasn’t a question of the lady changing. It was a question of my own shift of consciousness that removed hate from my experience.
What would happen if just one percent of the critical mass required to change the collective whole would decide today that divine Love is the true power and that hate is a projected and mistaken thought? It would change life as we know it today. What if we spent the rest of the day picturing the world in this state – void of hate and full of love? It is our divine, inherent right to live from the consciousness of Love. Our very spiritual identity depends upon it.
The picture of hate presented to us constantly on the news seems so real, permanent and even dreadfully expected. How can we ever dissolve such a huge, negative force? The answer lies in spiritually redefining what we see. Instead of hate, we can see the enormous absence of love as the calling for divine Love. Hate is a cry for love. The real news story is the power of Love to dissolve hate.
